The Final Video

Popout

Many of you were asking for "just one more." I thought about it for a while and decided what I wanted to do is find one video I had already posted that is THE video. The one that shows what GVOD was all about: funny and strange. So, it had to be this one. The original post is here. This video got a whopping 72 comments, and once in a while people seeing it for the first time will still leave comments.

Thanks again, everyone, for wasting precious time here. I am quite touched by all your comments from the good-bye announcement in my previous post.

Keep GVOD in your readers and stay subscribed to the email, in case I ever want to announce something new in the future. In the meantime, you can find me here. If you want help setting up, designing, and running your own blog for a reasonable price, contact me: michaelmartine [at] gmail dot com.

By way of one of my favorite blogs, Table of Malcontents comes a contemporary classic bit of animation. The characters are called Timbres, like musical timbre. Each one can make a musical sound. Luke's sound is... different.

It's Been Fun...

...but this is the end.

Running this blog is becoming too much of a chore. I vowed to end it when it wasn't fun anymore, and today I realized that's where things stand. As a man of my word, I will follow through. My real job demands a great deal of my time, and feeding my family is more important than posting videos. This blog will not be handed over to anyone else to continue, but I'll leave it for the archives as sort of a blogger "death with dignity."

Thank you for visiting (especially you long-timers). Many people have sent me emails saying I have inspired them to start their own blogs. This blog was one of the early pioneers in grabbing videos from the new video services on the web; it started shortly after Google Video itself started. I've learned tons from the constant experimentation in blog design, ad placement, content choices, and in dealing with commenters. It's been an interesting ride. For the most part, it's been a lot of fun, but that is now waning, so it is time to bow out gracefully.

I will not disappear entirely from the interwebs. My personal blog will come out of hiatus, but I'll be posting only sporadically on it. Designing WordPress blog templates is an extra source of income for me, and so I'll be using my blog for that. Keep in touch. You're free to drop me a line anytime: michaelmartine [at] gmail dot com.

Buh-bye.

Insane Japanese Vintage Kid's Show

Popout

Okay, let me see if I've got this straight: Octopi runs around on dry land and has a mouth like a blow-up sex doll. Chased by weird blobby things like Grimace's cousins, or something, but one of them seems to be the Octopus' spouse. Octopus is a terrible babysitter. Baby octopus child abuse ensues. Baby is dropped in water, which is where octopi really live, but everyone's all upset. Right. Am I missing something? Man, is this weird.

Ah... this takes me back! Sigh... I so fucking love Veruca Salt. I think they never made it big because they were scarily good "for girls."

New Design coming for GVOD

New design coming soon. I just noticed today that this one doesn't look so hot in Internet Explorer 7. Also, since I'm no longer in suspended animation, it's time to get the blog back into everyday posting mode. Look for the new design, soon!

Spumco - A Day in the Life of Ranger Smith

Popout

There was an awesome cartoon about Boo Boo going wild but it got taken down. This one, also by John Kricfalusi (Spumco), pays homage to all the different Ranger Smiths (and then some!). This is Yogi, Boo Boo, and Ranger Smith as only the creator of Ren & Stimpy could reimagine them! The pacing is a little odd, but if you've watched Ren & Stimpy before, you pretty much expect that.

Silent Library

YouTube: Silent Library

Popout
Totally hilarious game show concept: torture people in a kinds of crazy ways while trying to be quiet in a library. Chris Schaeffer sent this to me a while ago, when I only had videos from Google Video. It wasn't on Google Video, so I didn't post it. But I liked it so much that it got me thinking I should broaden the offerings to include YouTube. Now that I have, here it is (it has also been on TV in Japan). Thanks, Chris!

PS: I'm going back to one video per day. It seems most people focus on only one of them, anyway, and ignore the other one.

Never get between a tiny yippy-yip dog and his love, or you'll get his killin' face. What I really love about this is how the toy looks throughout the whole thing: stunned!

Caution: contains sexual abuse of stuffed toys by animals and really, really tacky furniture

Scooby Doo + Mighty Mouse: Saturday Morning Cartoons

In the tradition of Saturday morning cartoons, I present two: one is a remix/spoof on Scooby Doo as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming, the other is a classic old-time Mighty Mouse episode.

Gary Coleman, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, David Cross, and Mark Hamill guest star with the original Scooby Doo gang in this sendup of the old Scooby mysteries. I found a link to this awesome video at Umm... Yeah, a great new video blog where you can rate videos (Thanks, Shanti!).

I have no idea what it means, but they sure are a happy lot. Normally, I'd be creeped out by a man in pink dress, but this whole thing is too fun, happy, and cute for me to be--IS THAT JAMES BROWN? Oha! (Somebody please tell me what that means!)

Sifl & Olly was one of the greatest, funniest shows of all time, and MTV killed it because they were stupid. This is one of my favorite bits of all time. I really have to restrain myself from just posting every single Sifl & Olly video on YouTube RIGHT NOW. You can go see them for yourself here. I'll post one from time to time as the mood strikes.

Oblivion Domino Day

Popout

Carefully-designed domino course using game physics in the Oblivion game. They're actually books, not dominoes. You got your thumped corpses, tipping swords, falling watermelons (which never burst, unfortunately), and even ball bearings shooting down... well, chutes. And all to my favorite Nirvana song.

Gonna Make Some Changes...

I plan on making some big changes to GVOD in the near future. One of those changes, starting now, is to make it a solo effort once again. I've enjoyed the extra company. Poke and Mo have found videos that I didn't and probably wouldn't have. I'm not doing this because it isn't working, I'm doing it because I have some ideas about working it differently. This is about how I want to do things and where I want to take GVOD. While having a group effort has been a fun and worthwhile experiment, I feel very strongly that I want to go it alone.

I would like to thank both of them for all the time spent searching videos, posting, and commenting. I wish them the best of luck with their own blogs and all their endeavors.

Other changes will happen in the near future. They revolve around three things: opening the videos up to other sources besides Google (and changing the name of the site to reflect that), going back to just one video per day, and making some other changes to the site's design and features. I'm open to suggestions so leave a comment or email me with your ideas. One thing I will not do is change my URL or leave the Blogger platform. Anything I might do technically has to be easily accomplished in Blogger.

I know some people don't like change, but this whole thing has basically been one big, continuous experiment for me. That's one of the things that keeps it fun and makes it worth my while. So, the experiment continues!
